*Changes to Residential Electric Water Heater Standards: New Federal minimum energy factors (efficiency rating) for electric storage water heaters reduce energy consumption and help cut energy bills. After April 1, 2015, the new standard for tanks under 55 gallons is .96 and 2.01 for tanks over 55 gallons. While high efficiency traditional electric storage tanks are capable of meeting the new standard for tanks under 55 gallons, currently the only tanks capable of meeting the standard for over 55 gallons are heat pump water heaters.
